Your Calling and Purpose

God is the one who saved and called us with a holy calling. This wasn’t based on what we have done, but it was based on his own purpose and grace that he gave us in Christ Jesus before time began. – 2 Timothy 1:9

Have you ever wondered what your calling and purpose are? Why did God make you the way He did and place you in the exact location where you are? Several years ago I wondered the same thing and was directed by a godly mentor to ask God in prayer and persistently search His Word for the answer.

One day that answer came in a way that I knew with certainty was from God. My calling is found in Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.”

It was exciting to know what the Lord has called me to do, but there is more to it than just the calling. Verse 7 continues with, “The Lord God helps me, so I will not be ashamed. I will be determined, and I know I will not be disgraced.”

It is a privilege to have a calling from God on our lives, but it comes with responsibility. God was also calling me to daily meet with Him so that He could teach me His word. Morning by morning He wants to spend time with me and it requires faithfulness on my part. He encourages me with His word so that I can do the same for others and the words of correction I receive, are first for me.

Yesterday while writing the enemy flooded my mind with thoughts like, “Why are you doing this? It’s the weekend, relax and enjoy yourself.” As I continued to write more thoughts came, “What will people think of you? Are you trying to appear better than others?”

Ironically I was writing about being tempted and how Jesus responded when He was tempted. So I began to answer the questions based on God’s word to me. Why am I doing this? God told me to. He called me with purpose even though I am far from perfect. I’m blessed and grateful for the teaching and correction that He gives me as I spend time with Him every day. What will people think? It doesn’t matter what other people think, only what God thinks and if I obey Him, I will not be put to shame. His approval is the only one I should be concerned about. I have been forgiven much, therefore I love much. I cannot imagine my life without God and my relationship with Him is everything to me.

As believers we all have a calling and purpose. God created you on purpose and for a purpose. He has called you, positioned you and equipped you. There is a realm of influence – a group of people, that only you can inspire, encourage and lead. There is a plan that only you can complete. That’s how valuable you are!

God will help you fulfill what He has called you to do. Keep moving forward, giving it all you have – your whole heart as if doing it for God, knowing that He sees – He’s aware of all you do and He’s proud of you.

Father, thank you for giving us purpose which means the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Thank you for Your Word with confirms our callings, teaches us, corrects us and encourages us. Help us to faithfully do what You’ve called us to do and do it as if for You Lord. In Jesus’ name ,amen.
