Totally Devoted
Job was a man who lived in Uz. He was honest inside and out, a man of his word, who was totally devoted to God and hated evil with a passion. – Job 1:1
Job was a man who lost everything through no fault of his own, yet remained totally devoted to God. While laying in an ash heap, covered with sores he said to his wife, “We take the good days from God—why not also the bad days?”
While reading Job’s story I was convicted about my own whining when I experience tough days. It all seems so trivial in comparison to the overwhelming loss that he dealt with. He had unshakeable faith that was built on the confidence that God’s ultimate purpose would come to pass.
In his story, Job struggled to understand why everything was happening to him, and we are shown that he was not meant to know the reasons. He had to face his situation with many of the answers and explanations held back because it was only then that his faith would fully develop.
In life, we too must live one day at a time without complete answers to all of life’s questions. But the questions that we can answer are: Will we trust God no matter what? Or will we give in to the temptations to say that God doesn’t really care?
I want to follow Job’s example of being totally devoted to God no matter what. That is going to require faith and trust. We have the benefit of God’s Word and His Holy Spirit to hold tight to and to lean on and because of that, we can say in our darkest hours, “I don’t understand, but I trust You Lord. Your will be done.”
