    Beauty and the Beast

I’m fascinated with my study of Abigail because there is so much to learn from her and the stories that surround her. In one of the commentaries I was reading it asked the question, “What might her marriage have been like?” When I slow down and think about the bible characters and try to imagine what they were like deep down below the surface reading, it brings a whole new perspective to their stories. The bible tells us that she was intelligent and beautiful, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings. In biblical times marriages were arranged which meant that Abigail may not have been the one…

    Roscoe

Two weeks ago we picked up our new puppy Roscoe. He is a tri-colored beagle and full of energy. His fur is so soft and he loves to cuddle. We thought we were prepared for this new adventure having purchased everything we thought he would need and then some. We’ve been use to an older trained dog that is quite sedentary, so the frequent potty runs and chewing on everything has inspired us to get moving. I’m growing quite fond of my little fur buddy and I’ve begun to realize that he is a people magnet. On one of our many walks over the weekend, several people, especially small children,…

    Fear of the Lord

In our society we often hear about living the American Dream. The idea of having it all, being successful and happy. The reality is that none of that is what will bring real happiness and peace. Material things bring joy for a while, but that fades and more is desired. Relationships are wonderful and can bring a sense of fulfillment at times, but expectations change and people are human. Abigail found what really matters and what will last, the fear of the Lord. What does it mean as a believer to fear the Lord? Fearing the Lord means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great impact…

    Snapped

Have you ever had one of those days or moments when you just snap? Those final straw moments that the ugly side of you decides to make an appearance. I sure have. Those moments are not my finest hours and I know that I don’t represent God in them. People may wonder if I truly believe what I say I do when I’ve snapped. I’m grateful that those moments are not penned in history so that everyone can see how human I can be. It does soften my heart towards David who is referenced as a man after God’s own heart, yet he too was human and had moments when…

    Humble Submission

Those two words, humble submission, don’t always spark a “pick me,” mindset. Usually the last thing we want to do is to submit to someone or something, let alone do it with a humble spirit. Have you ever been promised something that took a long time to receive? How did you handle the waiting? Were you patient because you believed that at the right time everything would fall into place or were you anxious and tried to take matters into your own hands? King David was anointed to the position of king at a very young age and yet it was nearly 15 years before he actually became the king.…

    Living with Difficult People

When you read the title of today’s message you probably felt a hint of familiarity. We’ve all come across someone who is difficult to get along with and when possible, we avoid them and steer clear of their path. But how do you handle that type of person when it’s your husband? Abigail was married to a man named Nabal and he was a difficult man. His name means fool and he lived up to that definition. His servants described him as being such a wicked man that no one can talk to him. (1 Samuel 25: 17) Abigail couldn’t avoid crossing his path so she learned how to live…

    She’s Got It All

For the last few weeks I have been studying 1 Samuel 25. It is the story of a woman named Abigail. Her names means “Cause of Joy” and she was a shining example inside and out, of a Proverbs 31 woman. Sometimes when I think of what a Proverbs 31 woman is like I think of a woman who has it all together and can do anything; the ideal wonder woman. At times I compare myself and I never fail to find areas that I’m lacking, but I’ve learned that there is no joy in comparison. When we compare ourselves to others, we are only seeing the surface of their…

    Relationships

After a busy work week we headed out of town to attend my nephews wedding. It was the first time my granddaughters had spent the night in a hotel and they were so excited. I told them that we had a secret door between our rooms and they were very surprised to see grandpa on the other side of the door when they knocked. We had some fun girl time as we put on our dancing dresses and prepared to celebrate. Throughout the evening we visited and reconnected with family while dining and dancing. It was a very enjoyable event. Bright and early the next morning it was a race…

    Can I Trust You

The other day I was shopping at Walmart. I’m not a big fan of their new self-checkout system especially when you have bulky items like the good sized house plant I was purchasing. As I was scanning items in the cart it felt like I was playing the shell game. You know the one where you shuffle the shells all around looking for the piece underneath. The few grocery items that I was purchasing were hiding around the plant and as I scanned them and bagged them I ran out of room on the counter. The machine would keep asking if I was bagging that item and it seemed as…

    Mr. President

Politics are one of my least favorite things. There are so many different points of view and agendas. I do believe it is good to be informed, but I also believe that our freedom of speech is often taken to the extreme. As I was reading 1 Samuel 24 this week it was very clear on how we should handle our freedom of speech. David was being hunted by King Saul and was hiding in a cave with his small army of men when the king entered the cave to relieve himself. David’s men saw it as an opportunity from God to end Saul’s life; but it was really a…
