Distracted
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. (Luke 10:38-40)
There He was, the Savior of the world, at her front door and Martha welcomed Him in. The story begins in the best possible way but then takes a turn because of distractions. Can you relate? I can.
Within just a few moments of arriving at my Soul Retreat with God the distractions began. My email was filling up with work requests and questions that were waiting for answers. My mind was anxious and I wanted to quickly answer them all so that I could begin my time with God.
A few hours later I was finally ready to sit down and spend time with God. He graciously had me review some notes that I had taken months ago and I realized that this Soul retreat was going to dig deep.
The notes read:
Do not be surprised by the fiery attacks on your mind. When you struggle to find Me and to live in My Peace, don’t let discouragement set in. You are engaged in massive warfare spiritually speaking. The evil one abhors your closeness to Me and his demonic underlings are determined to destroy our intimacy. (Jesus Calling)
God’s agenda for this Soul Retreat was peace, rest, encouragement, words to write and joy. No wonder the enemy is so determined to ruin it. I had a choice to make; who would I surrender too?
Distractions kept Martha from the feet of Jesus and I was allowing distractions to do the same to me. God invites us to get away and spend time with Him everyday. How many amazing moments do we miss because we allow distractions to consume our minds and time?
God knows all the things in our lives that are fighting for our attention. He understands because He’s been there. Imagine the crowds of people that surrounded Him constantly and yet, He often went away to a solitary place to pray.
There was Godly purpose in those times of solitude. Don’t miss out on what God has for you because of distractions.
Be Intentional about seeking solitary time with God.
Praises & Prayers
Lord, thank you for Your example of choosing to spend alone time with the Father. Help us to remove the distractions that keep us from intimacy with You. Thank you for guiding and correcting us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Messages from His Word
Luke 10:41-42
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
