You Missed A Story
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God. – Proverbs 2:1-5
My phone beeped the other day signaling I had a new message. That message was, “There’s a story you may have missed,” and the post had a picture of a breaking story about a celebrity who wore a questionable gown to a major event.
Needless to say I didn’t care that I missed that story, but after spending several hours throughout the day scrolling through pictures and posting my own latest adventure I began reading my daily devotional which I had missed earlier.
That devotional began with today’s verse which admonishes us to search God’s word as if for hidden treasure. That statement challenged me to ask myself if I have been searching God’s Word as thouroughly and intently as I have been searching social media, Amazon and Google. Sadly, I haven’t been and that has caused me to miss out on what really matters, time with God.
How many times this week have I gone to bed with the most recent social postings on my mind, which of course prevented restful sleep? How many times has my mind replayed the daily news? How many stories and encouraging messages did I miss by not spending more time in God’s Word?
My devotional suggested that we make God’s voice the loudest in our head today. Imagine how much better our attitudes would be with our thoughts on Him. His voice is found in His word and through prayer and it’s what leads us to show grace, have patience and see the world in a different light. That Godly attitude is going to make for some great stories that we won’t want to miss.
