What Do You Seek?

I love those moments when I come across a nugget in the bible that catches my attention. Today I found one in John 1:35-38;

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.  When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.  Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

This began as a simple reading of how the first two disciples met Jesus. But as my study continued it became so much more.

The first question that Jesus asked them was, “What do you want?” How would you answer that question? Many people seek many different things from Jesus – then and now. So it is good to look at our own prayer lives and see what dominates our prayers. Are you praying predominantly for yourself or others? Do you pray more for ‘things’ or Him? Do you pray more for blessing or to be a blessing?  (JesusPlusNothing)

Many different answers came to my mind but the disciples’ response of “where are you staying?” was not one of them. What were they thinking? Why did they ask that question? What can we learn from the disciples’ response?

And here is the nugget……………… They wanted to be with Him. They weren’t looking for things – they were looking for Him. They simply wanted to spend time with Jesus. That too should be our heart.

We can easily see what Jesus thought of their answer by His response. Their answer warmed His heart and their desire to be with Him was granted. They got to spend time with Him because they were only seeking Him.

Look at all the amazing adventures and moments that the disciples had with Jesus because their desire was to spend time with Him. Imagine what our lives could be like with the same mindset.

My Prayer

Father, thank you for this precious nugget that You gave me today. I want my answer to the question, “what do you want?” to be “More of You Lord!” I want to follow You and tell others about You. I want to be Your disciple. Thank you for the invitation and for the adventures that await with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Where does my help come from?

Psalm 16:6

Your pleasant path leads me to pleasant places. I’m overwhelmed by the privileges that come with following you, for you have given me the best!

Psalm 16:5

My choice is you, God, first and only.
    And now I find I’m your choice!
