Vows

Please God! Help me! I will do anything if You will just help me right now! Have you ever felt or prayed that way before?

In our desperation we are willing to do just about anything to get the help we desire but when the moment has past do we follow through with our vows?

In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” (1 Samuel 1:10-11)

In return for being able to conceive a son, Hannah vowed to dedicate him to God for a lifetime of service. She so desperately wanted a child that she was willing to strike a bargain with God.

In the heat of the moment words can spill out with promises that carry future consequences we may not even think about. We must be careful about what we promise in prayer, because God may hold us to it. Although we are not in a position to barter with God, He may still choose to answer a prayer that has an attached promise. Are you as desperate to fulfill that promise as you were to the petition you made of God?

God took Hannah up on her promise, and to her credit, she kept her word, even though it must have been painful.

“When we pray we need to ask ourselves, “Will I follow through on the promises I’m making to God?” He always keeps His promises and He expects us to keep ours.

Be Intentional about keeping your vows to God.

Praises & Prayers

Father, I thank you that You always keep Your word and fulfill the promises that You make. Help me to do the same. Guard my mouth and heart to only speak what I know will honor You and help me not to make rash vows in the heat of the moment. Help me to trust in Your will and Your timing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
