Thought Life
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5
I recently starting reading a bible study called Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake. It’s a guide through participating in a 40 day sugar fast. I started this while at my last God retreat a week ago and what I discovered was that the key to success in this area will be overcoming my thought life.
After asking God to search my heart and show me areas that I need to refine and change, He revealed that my thought life is out of control and needs to be taken captive. Not only does it affect what and how I eat, but on a much larger scale it affects every area of my daily life.
God helped me understand that every thought I have either builds a wall of slavery or paves a path to freedom. Thoughts are like bricks, they carry weight and can either be used for good or for harm. Wrong thoughts are like heavy bricks that pile up and before long will prevent me from seeing all that God has for me. Right and good thoughts are strong truths that make a path which leads me to the promises of God.
He then gave me three bible passages to measure my thoughts by. In doing this I will be better able to sort through them and make sure I only keep those that will work towards all that God has for me.

- Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
His guidance was to slow down. Take each thought one at a time. Sift those thoughts through these verses and make the decision to take a step towards freedom one brick at a time. Now that I have His plan, it’s time to put it into action.
