The Heart
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” -1 Samuel 16:7
Our world is fascinated with titles and appearances. I remember years ago when I worked for a large corporation that they would give title promotions. The recipient did not receive more pay, but rather a more impressive title and more work responsibility. It was surprising how many people would strive to receive them. They were consumed by the outward appearance of their lives and perceived prosperity. But deep down they resented the longer hours and additional responsibilities.
The title of Daughter of The King is very impressive and reminds us of our tremendous value and worth to God. But that title in and of itself is meaningless without a heart that is fully devoted to God.
When the Lord looks at your heart does He see true brokenness over sin? Does He see a repentant servant that desires to be forgiven and restored to a right relationship with Him? Does He see a Daughter who delights in obeying her Father? Does He see a woman after His own heart?
We often pray for God to create a pure heart and steadfast spirit within us but do we truly mean the words we are saying or is it just for show? If we are sincere, when the Lord reveals and confronts us with our sin we will respond with humility and not defensive pride. We will not blame others, try to justify our actions and thoughts nor will we make excuses and minimize what we have done. Like King David, we will confess, “I have sinned against the Lord,” (2 Samuel 12:13) and in that sincere confession the Lord will see our hearts and restore us to a right relationship with Him.
Father, I want to sincerely pray as David did, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Lord I want to be a woman after Your own heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
