The Godly Character of Goodness
Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others.
2 Corinthians 8:21
Goodness is the quality of being virtuous or morally good. It’s associated with integrity and honesty as we do what is right, regardless of who’s watching and encouraging others to do the same.
When Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, his response demonstrated his desire to live a virtuous and morally good life. He acknowledged that this sin would be both wicked and directly against God. His integrity gave him the courage to verbally refuse and to physically run from the temptation. It was Joseph’s heart to honor God that kept him pure.
As believers in Christ, our past sins have been wiped away by the precious blood of Jesus and we’ve been given a new life in Him as new creations. This new life provides the opportunity to live a life that honors God by living with integrity, honesty and purity.
When we make the decision ahead of time to live a life of goodness, we are better able to handle situations that will arise and test our integrity. Our commitment to God to live a life that honors Him will give us the wisdom and courage to stand when temptations come.
When the Godly fruit of Goodness is displayed in our lives, we refuse to spread gossip, watch distasteful movies and TV shows or participate in inappropriate relationships. Our desire is to flee from the things that will hinder our relationship with God and tempt us to sin. This desire comes from a grateful heart that has experienced the goodness, mercy and grace of our loving Savior.
