Talking to Yourself
Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. – Proverbs 18:21 MSG
Every day you preach to yourself some kind of gospel – a false “I can’t do this” gospel or the true “I have all I need in Christ” gospel. No one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do. – (Dr. Paul David Tripp)
I’ve read that our mind is the battlefield. It’s where we wrestle with thoughts and emotions in an attempt to take them captive and make them obedient to Christ. It’s where we ward off the fiery darts of the enemy who hurls everything from little white lies and misquotes, to bald-faced lies at us, trying to keep us from being all that God has created us to be.
So as we talk to ourselves we need to be mindful of what we are saying. Ask yourself, What have I been saying to myself? What have I been saying to myself about myself? What have I been saying to myself about God? What have I been saying to myself about life, meaning and purpose, right and wrong, true and false, and good and bad? Does what I’m saying to myself line up with the Word of God?
As I read through my Truth Scripts today I took time to think about each one and what God was saying to me through each verse. Just hearing the message of love that He has for me was incredible, empowering and comforting. His presence was so evident that I didn’t want the moment to end.
With all the noise, voices, and opinions that are abundant in this world, how refreshing it was to be still and listen to the One that speaks life, love, peace, and grace. God in His grace has given you His Word so that you can speak truth to yourself in those moments when the only one talking is you.
