Something to Hold On To
Security; we all like to feel safe and secure. There is peace in knowing the details and what to expect.
In 1 Samuel 2, Hannah offers a prayer where she mentions “The Lord is my horn.” The meaning is that the Lord is her strength. She could hold on to Him and His promises. She goes on to say, “There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” That is where she found her security, her confidence and the ability to move forward. She had learned to be completely dependent upon Him and rest in Him.
Isn’t that what we want? To be at peace with what lies ahead in life for us. Can we feel that same assurance? Many times over the years I have wanted something to hold on to when trials and doubts came. I often wished I would know what the future held so I could prepare myself and find peace in the outcome.
I think the world feels the same way with all the fortune tellers, mystics and horoscopes. We want to know; to have something to hold on to. But would we have peace if we knew every detail or would we be anxiously trying to change the outcome?
God gives us just enough so that we can believe Him, trust Him and have something to hold on to. I don’t believe we could handle a full reveal of our future, it would be too much. Plus where is the faith in that, the trust that God will be with us every step of the way? The belief that He will provide and that He is in control?
There have been many times in my life that God has given me a glimpse of something in the future. Every time it has been a source of comfort and peace to know that He’s got this. It hasn’t revealed all the details, just enough to let me know that whatever comes, He is with me and He will see me through.
When we were purchasing our current home there were several delays and many times I thought the deals would fall through. I was extremely stressed until one night I had a small glimpse of me standing on the front lawn of the home. It was summer and I was flirting with my husband and I was healthy and fit.
That glimpse gave me something to hold on to through many struggles and challenges. We bought the home in December so knowing that I would be enjoying the summer on the lawn was so exciting. The flirting with my husband was a gift because I was experiencing a lot of frustration in my marriage. Looking healthy was so comforting when I went through health issues shortly after the move and being fit encouraged me through my Fit at 50. I knew that it would be achievable because God had already given me a glimpse at the outcome.
I was so blessed that He had given me something to hold on to. A promise of His provision, His protection and His presence. I still needed to show up and keep going. I needed to offer grace and forgiveness and repent of my wrong mindsets and attitudes. The lawn was not going to mow itself so I needed to be active in living and I could do it with confidence that the desired outcome, with God, was possible.
Other times the details are not as clear like in my Sunshine Prophesy, but the result is the same. God gave me something to hold on to, to trust Him for and to know that He is ever present.
Something that He has given to everyone is His word. It gives us a glimpse of what lies ahead but also explains that we will not fully comprehend all that God has in store for us. We can hold on to His word no matter what we are facing and by holding on to His Word, we are holding on to Him.
My prayer
Father, I thank you that You are my God and that I can hold on to You. Thank you for Your word that gives us a glimpse at what an amazing future You have created for us. Thank you for the personal glimpses into my own life that have encouraged, corrected and comforted me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Where does my help come from?
1 Samuel 2: 1-2
Then Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.”
“There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.”
1 Corinthians 2:9
That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no mind has imagined what God has prepared
for those who love him.”
John 1:1
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
