Restore My Soul- Lesson In Perfection

Perfection…….it’s a desire I have deep within that has created a monster over the years as it has run unchecked. It has lead to pride and self reliance as well as judgement and a desire for the approval of others. It has resulted in anger and frustration when things didn’t happen just as I wanted them to and it has robbed my peace.

God’s message to me: Perfection….A longing only God can fill.

I listened to a pod cast about the power of words. The speaker said that people tend to listen to negative words more because they give you something to fix. Positive words had a finished effect.

Perfectionism is a word that for years has demanded a response as well as excellence in performance which has left me with a higher bar to reach and a deep emptiness when that bar is not reached. By the speakers definition, perfectionism has been a negative word. But today I read about perfection in a positive light.

God created us with a longing for perfection. It’s a good desire which He alone can fill. With God as the deepest desire of our hearts, we won’t feel prideful, self reliant, judgmental or frustrated when things don’t go according to plan. He alone fulfills our yearning for perfection.

There is nothing perfect in this world except for God and that’s why closeness to Him satisfies our deep yearnings and fills us with joy.

With this reminder I was also given the opportunity to experience His truth. Throughout the week every plan that I made changed or fell through and every time God was right there bringing something good from the change.

A three day phone transfer gave me time to unpack and settle in to my new hone office. Delayed meetings offered extra time to complete last minute projects that came up. Short notice visits gave opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. God turned it all for good and He worked it all out perfectly!

My version of perfection would have missed so much and I wouldn’t have had His peace along the way. His way has so much adventure and options that I didn’t even know were possible. Thank you Lord!

Thank you for showing me that my deep desire for perfection is really a deeper desire for more of You!

My Prayer

Father, I love when You reveal Your truth to me. Thank you for showing me that something I have tried to achieve my whole life is really a deep desire to experience You more. I’m so grateful for the many adventures that I experience when I trust in Your timing instead of my own. Thank you for this season of transformation and I pray that I will move forward in all that You have for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Where does my help come from?

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
 in all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make your paths straight
