Restore My Soul – Cathedrals

Over the years I have had the opportunity to visit many cathedrals and take in their majesty. Some of my favorite things about them are the way that they have stood for centuries because of the sound architecture, the beauty of the stained glass windows that tell stories and the hand carved alters that are so detailed they fill you will awe and wonder at the intricate details.

I was reading a book called Getting In Shape God’s Way this summer and came across a verse in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that read, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

The writer asked you to think of a cathedral and pointed out the following:

  1. Their extravagant beauty and costly materials used to construct them
  2. Think of all they have endured in the hundreds of years since they were built
  3. They are majestic in appearance and have survived wars, opened their doors to people in need and pointed lost souls to God
  4. By their very appearance these towering temples remind people of God’s presence, power and love.

My message from God today was: “I am a cathedral for the Holy Spirit.”

Think about that. God calls you and me a temple for His Holy Spirit to dwell. Our physical bodies are His personal home. His temple. His cathedral.

“What you believe about the purpose of your body will determine the value you place on it. And the value you place on your body reflects the value you place on yourself as a person.”

So say it with me, “I am a cathedral for the Holy Spirit.”

1.God created me with extravagant beauty and I am perfectly and wonderfully made.

2.God created me to endure trials and trouble because He sustains me.

3. God has brought me through my own battles and I have the opportunity to share my journey with others and point them to Christ.

4. I am privileged to be a light in the darkness that reminds others of God’s presence, power and love.

“The way we speak about our bodies and the way we treat them determines how we glorify God in them. God says that your body becomes conduit through which He can emanate His divine power and glory.”

“He has honored us by coming to dwell in our spirit with His truth and life and He asks us to honor our body as His cathedral to glorify Him.”

My Prayer

Father, thank you for the beautiful visual of a cathedral in reference to our bodies where Your Holy Spirit dwells. Thank you for the beautiful and intricate way You have designed them and I pray that we will honor You with them. Let Your light shine in us so that others may see and desire to know You more. Let us be a place that welcomes people in and points them to You. Thank you for the many stories of our lives that read like the stained glass and add color and joy as we share how great our God is. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Where does my help come from?

1 Corinthians 6: 19-20

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
