Remember
Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
He’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil! Proverbs 3: 5-6 MSG
Early in the morning on the Saturday before Easter, I was reading through the Bible events that took place on that day many years ago. The disciples were no doubt in shock at the events that had transpired the day before and fearful of what lay ahead. I can relate to the numbness, the mind fog and the utter brokeness of loss. It’s as if every thought in your head has to fight through a maze of questions and doubts as they stuggle to grasp any sense of reality.
While the disciples waited in hiding and fear, the religious leaders remembered what Jesus had said about rising again in three days and did all within their power to prevent that from happening. They requested guards and a seal at the tomb to make sure that the body of Jesus would not be taken.
In truth, they were powerless. Their feeble attempts to prevent the promises of God are powerful reminders that God’s good and perfect will – will always prevail.
I tried to imagine how different that Saturday would have been for the disciples if they had remembered the words that Jesus spoke just days before. If they had, they would have been waiting in eager expectation for Sunday rather than living in fear. They would have been filled will awe and wonder at how God would accomplish what seemed impossible, while experiencing His peace in the waiting.
How often do we do the same thing? How many times have we lived in fear of the unknown? How many times have we forgotten the words of God that tell us:
- Peace be still
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart
- God will never leave me nor forsake me
- God will work all things out for good
- Be strong and courageous
- God will uphold me with His righteous right hand
- This battle is the Lords
- Watch and see what He will do
The victory came on Resurrection morning. Every word that Jesus spoke came to pass and the joy that the disciples experienced was glorious. The promises you have been given will also come to pass and like the disciples, we have been given words of hope and encouragement to hold on to in the waiting.
