Pride Vs. Humility

Proverbs 16:18 TPT

Your boast becomes a prophecy of a future failure.
The higher you lift up yourself in pride,
the harder you’ll fall in disgrace.

An early morning meeting began with King Xerxes asking Haman, “What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?”

Now Haman thought to himself, “Who is there that the king would rather honor than me?” So he answered the king, “For the man the king delights to honor, have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with the royal crest placed on his head. Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!”

Haman was very specific about the honor that should be given, almost too specific. Perhaps he had often fantasied of receiving such treatment, after all, Haman had wealth, but he craved something even his money could not buy – respect. Now it seemed within his grasp.

The king responded to Haman’s suggestion by saying, “Go at once. Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.”

Just the night before Haman had bragged about his position and the honor he was about to receive. Now he was humiliated and soon to be marked for death. How quickly life can change.

What a contrast the life of Christ was to Haman. Jesus selflessly gave His life for others. He set aside His heavenly place to come to earth, be mistreated and rejected by those He came to save, and still He took the punishment we deserved.

Remembering Christ’s example can help us when we think we think more highly of ourselves than we should. All glory belongs to Him.

Be Intentional about being humble.

Praises & Prayers

Father, please forgive me when I think of myself more highly than I should. You set such a humble example by coming to earth and choosing to be a servant and dying on the cross for me. Help me to value others more than myself. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Messages from His Word

Philippians 2: 3-5

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,  not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.
