Nobel Character

What are some of the characteristics that you would look for in a spouse? What attributes would benefit your home and life if your spouse possessed them? David had just experienced the ideal characteristics he would like in a wife, during his encounter with Abigail.

David recognized what an asset Abigail would be to him as a wife since she was clearly someone who managed well, protected her husband’s interests, and could recognize dangers in time to avert disaster. Perfect attributes of a wife for a soon to be king.

When David heard that Nabal had died, he rejoiced that God has avenged him and that he had been spared making a terrible mistake. He then sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. Not only would he have a wife of noble character, but the offer of marriage to a rich widow would also solve his food and supply problem and guarantees that he wouldn’t be put into this position again.

Note how beautifully Abigail answers his proposal, with confidence and submission, true to her nature as a noble woman of her time. She got up, and then bowed down, face to the ground, saying, “I’m your servant, ready to do anything you want. I’ll even wash the feet of my master’s servants!”

In His mercy, God had provided for Abigail. David showed honor to Abigail by taking care of her and the Lord faithfully provided for her and all her household. Through her good judgment and choosing to act humbly and bravely, God showed Himself strong on her behalf.

Not only should we look for Godly character in a spouse, but as a spouse we too should display Godly character.

Father, thank you for the reminder of what noble character looks like. Help us to not only desire it in other people, but to be living examples of it for them. Thank you for always providing everything we need. In Jesus’ name, amen.
