M&M Moments
On a cool Saturday morning in January I was pleasantly surprised to see all the sunshine, a little warmer temperature and some birds singing! It made me smile and I took a moment to enjoy it and say, “Thank you Lord, this is so nice.”
I went inside and enjoyed a few cups of delicious hot coffee and visited with my husband. We had slept in after a long work week and it felt great to just relax for a moment. Then the phone rang and the moment was over.
A client needed some immediate assistance so I would have to go to the office. While mentally making a list of the things I needed and wanted to accomplish, the busyness began. Feed the dog, workout, start the laundry, clean the house and after helping my client I wanted to fit in a spa night.
As I began my list my husband mentioned some things he wanted to accomplish and offered to drive me to the office and after we both finished our tasks we could go to lunch. That sounded nice and would require a bit more squeezing of my schedule.
I decide that the housework could wait until later because I needed to get showered and to the office. When I was ready to go, my husband was gone. To save time he went to pick up his work trailer and was on his way home to get me. That gave me about 15 minutes….oh what should I do?
Thoughts of quickly cleaning the bathrooms or wiping down the kitchen crossed my mind. So did the reminder that I had not had my quiet time with God. My mind was racing to decide and I thought 15 minutes would not be enough time for God time. Then the verse, “seek first His Kingdom,” came to mind.
So I sat down on the couch and prayed. I prayed thanks for the beautiful day and for wisdom to do what needed to be done. As I began to pray the anxiousness of rushing and trying to accomplish so much began to ease. I was starting to feel the peace that surpasses understanding.
I had missed a few daily devotions and decided to catch up on them. The first one had a quote that I know was straight from God, “If you are too busy to seek God, then you are too busy.” The second quote was, “the way we start our day can affect the way it goes all day, so be sure to get started right.” (My time with God by Joyce Meyers)
How perfect was that! As I sat there thinking about these short little messages from God I thought of Mary & Martha. In the bible story Martha was so busy trying to make everything perfect that she missed the One thing.
As I was writing down this experience I hurriedly scribbled, M & M moments so I wouldn’t forget, thinking Mary & Martha moments of choice. What will you choose?
That decision to spend the 15 minutes with God was priceless. My laundry wasn’t going anywhere and my housework will wait for me. But in that moment He gave me a sweet reminder that I always have a choice.
That choice set the tone for the rest of the day and although there were delays along the way and my list did not get accomplished, I still think it was a very good day. That was because I was living out the day with the One who made all the difference.
He has such a personal touch to the lessons He teaches me. My favorite type of chocolate candy is M & M’s. Now each time I eat them I get a sweet reminder that I have a choice, do I want a Mary or Martha Moment?
My prayer
Father, thank you for the beautiful day you blessed me with. I love Your creative lessons and how they always put a smile on my facing thinking about the unique ways You teach me. My moments with You make all the difference and I’m so blessed to be able to spend time with You. I Love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Where does my help come from?
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Luke 10: 41
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
