Meet: Sarah & Elizabeth
For the month of October we will discover some the many lessons that can be learned from studying the lives of Sarah and Elizabeth.
Overview – God Keeps His Promises
Sarah and Elizabeth were both women in the bible who waited a long time for God’s promises to be fulfilled. How they spent their time waiting had long lasting effects not only on them, but the world.
Sarah was married to Abraham and was told that she would have a son. In the waiting she began to doubt that the promised child would come through her and took matters into her own hands. Giving her maid to her husband to produce an heir resulted in the birth of Ishmael. Then when she was 90 years old the promised son arrived and was named Isaac. The descendants of those two sons are the Arab nation and the nation of Israel which are still feuding to this day.
Elizabeth was also entering old age without children which was very painful because a woman’s value was largely measured by her ability to bear children. But she still remained faithful to God. Her husband Zechariah was a priest that served in the temple and received a message from an angel that Elizabeth would have a son. Elizabeth knew that her child was the long-hoped-for gift from God. Her son was John the Baptist.
