Meet: Mary – The Mother of Jesus
For the month of December we will discover some the many lessons that can be learned from studying the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Overview – A Mother’s Love
Mary of Nazareth had the unique privilege of being mother to the very Son of God. Yet most of the pains and pleasures Mary experienced in motherhood can be understood by mothers everywhere. Mary was the only human present at Jesus’ birth who also witnessed His death. She saw Him arrive as her baby son, and she watched Him die as her Savior.
When the angel told her that her baby would be God’s son, her reply was, “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.” Her song of joy revealed how well she knew God, for her thoughts were filled with words from the Old Testament.
After Jesus was born Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple to be dedicated to God. There they met Simeon who recognized Him as the promised Messiah and praised God. He told Mary that a sword would pierce her our soul. A big part of her painful privilege of motherhood would be to see her son rejected and crucified by the very people he had come to save.
Mary’s response to her circumstances is remarkable. She knew her scriptures and had a proper respect for God and His authority which made her willing to submit to God’s plan and purpose for her life.
Lessons from her life
- God’s best servants are often ordinary people who make themselves available to Him.
- God’s plans involve extraordinary events in ordinary people’s lives.
- A person’s character is revealed by his or her response to the unexpected
Life Application
Are you a willing servant, available to be used by God?
Remember
God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son that whosoever believed in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.
