Live Boldly

Meet: Jocebed

For the month of November we will discover some the many lessons that can be learned from studying the life of Jocebed.

Overview – Courageous

Jocebed was the mother of Moses.  Her story on the surface may be very familiar, but when you take a moment and imagine yourself in her shoes you see a woman that defines courage.

Pharaoh had issued a decree that all male babies were to be killed.  Having just given birth to a son Jocebed immediately went into action and hid her son for three months.  When she could no longer hide him she wove a basket, covered it with pitch and placed it among the reeds on the Nile river with Moses inside.

She had to give up her son to save Him and God in His infinite wisdom, made it possible for her to continue caring for her son when Pharaoh’s daughter found him on the river and needed a nurse maid.

Jocebed did not let the fear of what might happen cause her to miss an opportunity that God had given her and she made full use of that opportunity.

When Moses became older she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son.  Once again she had to give him up.  God used her courageous acts of saving and hiding her baby to begin His plan to rescue His people from Egypt.

Lessons from her life

  1. When faced with evil, look for ways to act against it.
  2. Trust God and He will give you the courage to face any situation
  3. She surrendered what she treasured to the will of God

Life Application

Concentrating on God and His power will give us the courage to face the situations that seem humanly impossible.

Remember

Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Hi, this is Diane. Today is the first day that I have acted on a commitment to get back into God’s word. While I have gleaned a verse here and there that have sustained and even grown me I am determined to delve into his word each day.
Today I had been looking for how I wanted to pursue this goal; pick a book of the bible and begin reading which has been my preferred method in the past seemed overwhelming for some reason; a devotional book too impersonal, then just as I had given up on doing more than reviewing a single verse God has been teaching me, a letter you sent out in June in a bright envelope showed up on my table again out of nowhere. Thinking it was a new letter I had missed I opened it, recognized it and re-read it. From there I decided to check out your page (obviously confessing I had not done so previously) and was drawn in by our friendship and the personal way in which you wrote I decided this is where I will begin my daily journey back into God’s word. I will continue storing individual verses into my life and this will put me back on the path of the bigger picture of His word and world.
I just wanted to take this time to tell you Thank you for being faithful to God’s calling and for being my friend.
