Live Boldly

Humility

Imagine riding a donkey into a scenic mountain ravine. Cliffs on both sides keep you moving forward and guide you towards what lies ahead. As you look up an army of 400 angry men are headed your direction intent on killing your entire household. What would you do?

Abigail was in this exact situation and when she saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.  She fell at his feet and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord, and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say.”

David had just been cursing Nabal for his unkindness and swearing revenge against him and those related to him when a beautiful woman crossed his path, dismounted from her donkey and bowed before him. That was probably the last thing he expected to see when he set out on his rampage. Abigail’s act of humility stopped David in his tracks.

This was a pivotal moment for Abigail, because she had no idea how David would respond. But still, she chose to do the right thing. She looked beyond herself and acted with humility and compassion. She sought to make peace with the very one her husband had angered and asked for a chance to speak and right the wrong.

Humility is a submissive attitude of the heart that puts others first. Being a parent can be a very humble job, wiping noses, changing diapers, and meeting a child’s every need. Letting someone ahead of you in line when you see they are in a hurry is an act of humility. Cleaning the bathroom of your office, even though you own the company, is an example of humility. An athlete who credits his success to his teammates, even though he has great skill, shows humility.

God’s word tells us to clothe ourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Abigail’s humble actions prevented the loss of her entire family. Imagine what changes could take place in your life with a little humility.

Be Intentional about being humble.
