Live Boldly

How God see you

I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women. Song of Solomon 2: 1-2

In this world we live in, it is very hard not to compare yourself with others. Social media more often than not portrays images that are so photo-shopped that the real person may be hard to recognize in real life. Games on Facebook allow you to see what you might look like if your hair color were different, if your weight were different, if everything about you were different. And sometimes it doesn’t take social media or the world’s opinions to get us thinking less of ourselves; we sometimes think less of ourselves and speak untrue comments in our own minds.

Today’s passage caught my attention when I read further into the study notes. The woman speaking in verse one said, “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” The rose, likely a spring crocus, and the lily are flowers commonly found in Israel. What the young woman was saying was, “I’m not so special; I’m just an ordinary flower,” to which Solomon replied, “Oh, no, you are extraordinary – a lily among thorns.”

The Song of Solomon is a picture of God’s love for His people. The bible is God’s letter of love to us. In His word are many passages that describe how He sees us. Here are a few reminders just in case you forgot how beautiful, precious, loved, and treasured you are, just the way you are!

  • Psalm 139:14 – I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
  • Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
  • Isaiah 43:1 – Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.
  • Zechariah 2:8 – For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye.
  • Luke 7:47 – Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown.
  • Galatians 2:20 – I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
  • Song of Solomon 2:2 – you are extraordinary – a lily among thorns.
