Help my unbelief
“But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” – Mark 9:22-24
At one point or another we have all faced unbelief. While we know in our hearts that the Lord is good, faithful and all powerful, if we are honest with ourselves we have all wondered if He can or will help in our own personal circumstances.
Today’s passage is from a story about a man whose son was possessed and had been since early childhood. It clearly demonstrates the power of God. It also teaches us that it doesn’t matter how bad things appear or how long the problem has been going on, God is able to help. And if we’re at the point where even hoping – believing – feels like too much, He makes a way for that too. We ask, and He gives us belief.
Psalm 46:1 reads, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Another word for refuge is shelter and some Bible translations use the term safe place. Isn’t that exactly where we want to be when trouble comes? In a safe place.
God’s Word is full of promises for us to hold on to and lean into when we face unbelief. As we speak His truth we begin to feel His presence and find the strength to believe what He says is possible. Another way to increase our belief is to remember what He has already done by reviewing the many prayers He has already answered.
Looking back through my Royal Records of the Daughter of the King journal, I can see God’s faithfulness throughout the many pages of petitions. I can see how He brought me through things that made no sense and took days, weeks, and even years to see fulfillment. Things that broke my heart and exactly how God mended it. His Word and the journal path of His faithfulness, were His way of answering my prayer – help my unbelief.
