Faith to Fulfill
As I continue on my quest to know what a person after God’s own heart would be like, I believe that that person would be someone who is faithful to fulfill their vows and promises. That person is one who has sought the Lord and prayed deeply for an answer to their prayers. They then made a commitment to God either in a promise to follow Him in obedience or a specific vow.
Hannah was a woman who did just that. Her vow was to give her son, the one she had waited for, prayed for and finally received, back to God. David made promises to follow God all the days of his life and we do the same when we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior.
In that promise we become examples and mentors to our children and just like Hannah we give them to God. Not exactly in the way she did, but in other equally important ways.
Hannah truly believed that “There is no one holy like the Lord, there is no one besides You; there is no rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2. This is the truth that she taught her son and I can only imagine how many times during his young life that he held tight to them and found strength from them.
When we think of our children, what works the hardest against our heartfelt desire for them to be used by God in whatever way He chooses? For me it is the fear of losing them.
I read Hannah’s story so many time when I was losing Brock. I was in awe of her faith to give her child to God willingly. I was not feeling the same willingness. Hind sight has shown me so many times God’s perfect will being fulfilled.
I sought God in my need. I didn’t make vows because at the time I saw the situation as a punishment for my sins – until believers prayed for us. They prayed that we would come to know God. They were Godly examples.
After Brock went to be with Jesus I remember thinking and feeling that it takes a lot more faith to believe when they’re gone. Hannah was able to see her son each year.
Since then I’ve learned that God’s blessings and comfort are so much deeper and sweeter and personal this way. I’ve learned that there is no one holy like the Lord; that there is no one besides Him. That there is no rock like My God.
My Prayer
Father, I thank you for Hannah’s example and commitment to follow through with her vow to You. I too committed to follow You and teach others about You through the way I live my life. You blessed me with sons and grandchildren and I pray that I will be a Godly influence in their lives. Use them however you choose and I pray that I will be a willing to give them to You in any way that will serve Your purpose. Your ways are good and You Lord are holy. There is no one like You and I know that You are my rock and my God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Where does my help come from?
1 Samuel 2:2
“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides You; there is no rock like our God.”
