Live Boldly

Even If

Over the weekend I was reading a book by Mesu Andrews called Of Fire and Lions. It’s the story of Daniel and has the author’s fictional account of what his life might have been like while living in Babylon.

In the book, the story of Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and the fiery furnace is told. I’ve always been in awe of their faith and trust in God. As they refused to bow down and worship the idol, then as they boldly confronted an angry king and finally as they were thrown into a blazing furnace.

With each new challenge their determination to serve and honor God grew stronger and stronger. They hoped for a miracle, but trusted that God’s will would be done even if that meant that they would lose their earthly lives.

Daniel 3: 16-18 reads, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.  If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.  But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

That’s the kind of faith that I want. “Even if” kind of faith. Even if things don’t turn out the way I want them to I will still believe and trust in God. Even if life feels out of control and to big, I will believe that God has purpose and will bring me through. Even if I don’t understand I will follow God’s leading and believe that He knows best.

Just reading that passage of scripture makes my soul feel empowered and bold. Knowing that God is able means He is all powerful and knowing that He will deliver, whether in this life or the next, means that He is fully in control. Our place is to believe and trust in Him, even if.

My Prayer

Father, I am in awe of the many ways that You have shown Your love, direction, provision and protection in my life. Thank you for Your word that reminds us of Your faithfulness. Give us the boldness of these men so that we too will stand in confidence that our God is the One and Only Lord of Heaven and Earth. You are God alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Where does my help come from?

Daniel 3:17-18

“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.  But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
