Christmas Communion

Good morning and Merry Christmas! It’s a perfect day to be celebrating our Savior’s birth. Before all the festivities begin I wanted to take a moment and remember why all of this activity is happening in the first place. I can easily get caught up with planning, shopping, cooking and all other activities and completely miss the reason for the season.

With all the preparations I sometimes loose the peace, the purpose and the spirit of Christmas. I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve purchased gifts at times just to cross a name off my list. Giving can sometimes be turned into completing a task and the heart of why is completely lost.

I was reading an article that mentioned how communion is often skipped during Christmas services because more modern approaches are being used to draw people to attend. Isn’t that sad. The whole reason for Christmas is Jesus – the Savior of the world! Communion is a reminder of the greatest gift ever given – His life for us!

So this morning, before the presents are opened, breakfast is cooked and company arrives, I’m going to take a moment and meet Jesus for a time of remembrance. My own quiet communion with Christ.

A time to think about what His birth means, Immanuel – God with us. A time to think of the promise of redemption and restored relationships with God. A time to think about the love He has for me, enough to die for me. A time to renew my heart with confession and forgiveness. A time to give thanks. A time to recommit to following Him.

Then with a right heart, full of peace and purpose I will be ready for whatever the day may bring. I will be able to better love my family and friends and to serve them from a grateful and thankful heart.

That’s what the early church believers did. “They were unified as they worshiped at the temple day after day. In homes, they broke bread and shared meals with glad and generous hearts.” (The Voice translation)

As I break bread with my family today, I want to share the Love of Christ with them. Each person a treasure in my life. Each gift, a reminder of the ultimate gift of Christ. Our meal together, a reminder of God’s provision. This season as a time to celebrate Jesus and joining Him in being a light to the world.

My prayer

Father, thank you for Jesus, for His sacrifice that restored the opportunity for a relationship with You. Thank you for the family and friends that you have blessed me with and for the opportunity to lead them to You. Thank you for my own quiet time with You and the reminders of Your presence every day, Your generous provision and Your purpose. Amen.

Where does my help come from?

Matthew 1:23

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”
