Blessed are Those Who Mourn
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. – Matthew 5:4
The Lord has sent me to bestow on the brokenhearted a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. (Isaiah 61:3)
God loves you and wants to reassure you and show you that He has plans for you beyond your disappointment, pain and suffering. It’s in our sorrow that God’s promises mean so much to us and it is then that we experience His comfort, peace and the hope of eternity with Him.
While the heartaches of this world are temporary we must also recognize our need to mourn over our own sinfulness in a way that motivates change. God sometimes uses sorrow in our lives to help us turn away from sin and seek eternal life. It’s then that we experience the comfort of forgiveness and the joy of living a life that has been renewed and restored to a right relationship with God that far outweighs any hardships and troubles we face.
We will mourn in this life, but our sadness will not be without hope. God has promised to turn our mourning into joy, give us beauty for ashes and to be our refuge and strength, an ever present help in time of need.
In turn we have the privilege of comforting others with the comfort we have received from God. Meaning that we first have the opportunity to share the message of His grace in our lives and how we have been forgiven much, therefore we love much. Then we get to share about the hope we have in eternity with God where He will wipe away every tear and make all things new.
