Blessed are The Meek
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5
To be meek means to possess a strong but gentle spirit of selfless devotion to God that humbly submits to His purposes. In other words, it is power under control. The Godly character of meekness is shown in the life of those whose actions and words demonstrate the proper attitude or temperament of a servant of God that is in tune with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus set an example of meekness for us when He washed His disciples feet, then challenged us to do the same. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:12-17)
As disciples, we should think of ourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of Himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of Himself that He had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, He set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, He stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, He lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion. (Philippians 2:6-8 MSG)
We are called to be imitators of Christ and to do that we must put aside our own self ambitions and pride, not looking to our own interest, but to the interest of others and in the spirit of meekness, think of others more than we think of ourselves. In doing that we are laying down your life for others by putting them first and making their needs more important than your own. It’s about being selfless and sacrificial in our actions towards others, just as Christ was towards us.
