Better is one day
Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. – Psalm 84:10
Earlier this week I wrote about taking a day off to spend with God and I have to say that today’s verse perfectly describes what that day was like.
I plan vacations for a living and part of my job is to find the funnest and most memorable experiences for my clients. I get so excited when I describe the final itineraries and hear the anticipation in their voices as they prepare for their long awaited get-a-way.
While vacations are generallly fun, there is always a bit of stress, sometimes delays and once in awhile plans fall apart and the trips are cancelled. You just hope for the best and make the most of the situation.
But my day with God was nothing like that. As I spent the day walking and talking with God I could feel the weight of the world fall from my shoulders. I was blessed with time to write for this blog which meant more uninterrupted time with God as He directed my thoughts and words. Often I would just smile and say, “Thank you Lord!” as I breathed in the fresh air and listened to the birds sing. My soul relaxed and was refreshed. Joy replaced the stress and I felt renewed and empowered for the days ahead.
Like some vacations I’ve experienced, I didn’t want this time to end. I wanted more. More of God. More of His peace. More of His voice speaking to my heart and soul, so much so, that I eagerly planned out our next get-together and finished the day with the most incredible sense of awe and wonder at His presence.
That one day truly was better than a thousand elsewhere.
