Behind the Service

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. (Acts 9:36)

The very first description of Dorcas, even before her names were mentioned, was that she was a disciple. Through the Spirit-empowered ministry of Philip the eveangelist, a Christian Church was established in Joppa and from an early date the church was not only a center of fervent evangelism, but also of a well organized social service.

Dorcas came to know Christ as her Savior in this church and caught the vision of how she could serve Christ with her money and her needle, but behind her sewing was a saved soul.

When Luke, the author of the book of Acts, said that Dorcas was full of good works, he meant the word full to refer primarily to her inward grace, which prompted the outward deeds. Her good works flowed from a heart grateful to God for His saving grace.

Why do we do the acts of service that we do? What is our reason behind the meal prepared for the neighbor, the note card of encouragement, the time spent listening to a friend?

As believers saved by grace, we fully understand what it’s like to receive kindness, mercy, love and forgiveness. We know what it’s like to be heard and receive an encouraging word from our Savior. Because we have been given much, we can love much.

The motivation behind our service should always be grounded in the grace that we have freely been given. A heart for God and and heart for people.

Be Intentional about giving the grace and comfort you have received to others.

Praises & Prayers

Father, thank you for the grace and mercy that You have given to me. Help me to serve from a grateful heart and never grow weary of sharing the comfort You have given me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Messages from His Word

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
