Approachable
How approachable are you? It’s not a question that we often ask ourselves but it is one that will cause you to take a deeper look into your personality.
Abigail was approachable; which by definition is friendly and easy to talk to. That characteristic was necessary to deal with the pending disaster that was headed her way.
One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings, but he hurled insults at them. Yet these men were very good to us. They did not mistreat us, and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing. Night and day they were a wall around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them. Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him.”
What a contrast between Abigail and Nabal’s character; one was approachable and the other so wicked no one could talk to him. Can you imagine being so bold with your words to your employer? How about your spouse or family member? The servant felt confident in approaching Abigail with the truth because he knew her character and that she would respond with wisdom and discernment. Could others feel that comfortable in approaching you with the truth and their problems knowing that you would listen and do your best to help them?
Fortunately for us, God is also approachable. In fact we are told that we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Be Intentional about being approachable.
