Divine Encounters

A Late Lunch

Who knew that leaving late for my lunch break was really a Divine Encounter in the making. On Friday I arrived home for lunch about 45 minutes later than I usually do. The doorbell rang and two young LDS Missionaries were waiting for a response.

As soon as I saw them I prayed that God would give me the words to say and then I invited them inside. Introductions were made and they said they were going through the neighborhood wanting to get to know about the residents.

That was the open door to share about what I believe and what it’s like to have a relationship with Christ for me. I was lead to mention how personal our faith is and that at some point in everyone’s life they have to make a choice for themselves about what they believe regardless of how others respond.

One of the missionaries said that his father was Catholic and his mother Pentecostal and that when he made a decision to go on his mission they rejected him. I told him that I understood having received the same from my parents when I made my choice, but was able to add that choosing Christ is worth it all.

God gave me bible verses to share about the disciples that gave up everything to follow Christ and were told by Him that they would receive much more in Him.

He also gave me the verse about being prepared to give an answer for the hope that we have, but do it with respect.

Then He gave me the opportunity to give them each a “You Matter” card and share how intimately God knows them and loves them.

They asked if they could pray with me and I answered, “Yes and I’ll say the prayer.” I was then blessed with the opportunity to pray for them.

I heard a pastor speak about not opening doors to missionaries and not waving to them on the streets as you pass by. It never settled well with me. I have family members who are or have been LDS missionaries and I wouldn’t want them treated badly especially by a believer in Christ.

They are lost and Christ said that He came to seek and save the lost. He didn’t avoid them but rather He spoke truth to them and prayed for them. Jesus gave us the great commission to go out and make disciples. I think that when missionaries or Jehovah’s witnesses ring our doorbells, it’s a gift from God because He is placing an opportunity to do what He’s called us to do right at our doorstep.

If I had left for lunch on time I would have missed that opportunity. Thank you Lord for Your orchestration of this Divine Encounter.
